I originally published this post on Instagram in December 2022. I’ve since archived it along with other things I’ve written. I’ve become disenchanted with how people take content and don’t source or credit back to the original creator, author. I can’t figure out if people have no understanding of intellectual property, copyright laws, and plagiarism or if they simply have no business ethics and don’t care. Either way it’s troubling.
Since I’ve archived this post I’ve gotten quite a few direct messages. I know people say this as a marketing tactic to increase clicks and buying interest. But people really have messaged me asking where they can find my “Hair Loss” post. They want to read it again now that their hair is falling out or they have a friend who is losing hair. So, I’m republishing it on Substack where writers and readers (I hope) know how to respect copyright and intellectual property!
I Lost 40% (Unofficial Guesstimate) of My Hair over the Past Two Months
Apparently, there’s this thing called Covid hair loss. Two to three months after having Covid, your hair can fall out. It’s awful.
If you’ve never heard of this, ask around, and you’ll quickly find people, hair stylists, and mainstream media like NPR who are talking about Covid hair loss.
I’m posting my own story because a month ago (November 2022) I was scouring the Internet, as we do, to find a solution. While there are a lot of hair product and supplement recommendations out there, it’s hard to decipher what’s actually worth trying.
I’m a cut-to-the-chase kind of gal. Especially when my hair is coming out by the handful. I needed and wanted hope plus protocols that worked fast! This is the post I wanted to read but couldn’t find.
Here’s What Worked For Me
I have no financial connection (affiliate or commission kickback) for mentioning any of the products or companies below.
Inversion Hair Growth Method. The Internet has a ton of articles and videos that claim you’ll grow 1-4 inches of hair per month when you hang your head upside down and massage oil into your scalp. I used coconut and caster oil mixed with rosemary and peppermint essential oils for four minutes a day, one week a month. You’re not supposed to go longer than four minutes per session or exceed one week per month. I thought the whole thing sounded ridiculous, but I did it anyway, and I’ll be damned if my hair hasn’t grown!
November 3, 2022 —— November 26, 2022
The lighting is different because I was in an elevator in the first picture. Otherwise, I hadn’t been to the hair salon - no color, cut, extensions or photo filters. I also haven’t used any heat, hair dryer or curling iron for weeks. Both pictures are wash and air dry. I did inversion therapy the first week of November and by the end of November, my hair had grown significantly.
Kitsch Soap Bar Shampoo - The rice water shampoo and conditioner is incredible. I’ll never go back to bottle shampoos again. Read the rave reviews on the Kirsch website for the rice water hair products. The first time I used it my hair looked noticeably better. I’m glad I found it in my online search. It’s only $13.
Food as Medicine
Coconut oil and rice (water) are two foods that I used topically, now let’s talk about what I used internally.
Whatever is making people sick needs to be bound up and removed from the body quickly and efficiently. Hair falls out when we’ve been exposed to toxins and poison i.e. chemo, heavy metals, radiation, Covid, etc. So binders can be a useful defense —diatomaceous earth, beans, citrus pectin, charcoal, chlorophyll — all seemed to help me. I rotated them and took different binders on different days. There’s no rhyme or reason when I took one binder over another. I just took what intuitively felt right (approximately one binder twice a day) each day.
Diatomaceous Earth - Is loaded with silica, which is a crucial hair nutrient. It binds toxins in the gut (like parasites) which is important when fighting Covid. It also protects the skin, hair, and nails. Diatomaceous Earth is inexpensive but you must take food grade! I take 1 tsp mixed in water on an empty stomach two hours away from food. I feel like it played a significant and fast role in stopping my hair loss and then rebuilding my stringy, thin and damaged hair.
Beans - I’ve been eating 1 1/2 cups of black beans every a day this past month. I believe this has been a HUGE piece of my healing. Listen to my interview with Unique Hammond about the Bean Protocol. I continue to experience the profound effects that the soluble fiber in beans provides, which includes stopping hair loss. The beans bind up the toxins in bile and move them out of the body.
Modified Citrus Pectin - “Modified citrus pectin has the natural ability to surround and trap heavy metal ions, thus facilitating the elimination of heavy metals from the body. In addition, the citrus molecules have their own innate affinity to bind to various types of unwanted cells.” Source
Activated Charcoal - “Activated charcoal is a potent natural treatment used to trap toxins and chemicals in the body, allowing them to be flushed out so the body doesn’t reabsorb them.” Source
Chlorophyll - Boosts keratin in the hair, it also increases hair growth, nourishes the hair follicle and prevents hair loss. Source
Other Things That Helped
Heart & Soil supplements - I’ve been supplementing with grass fed bone marrow + liver and skin, nails and hair capsules. I think they helped stop my hair loss and improved my health post Covid. Read the details and info about the healing power of organ meats on their website.
Colostrum - “Shown to reactivate the hair follicle stem cells. Supports the hair microbiome. Works to combat hair loss by reversing inflammation and blocking chemical-induced damage to the follicle.” Source
No Alcohol - I’m so grateful I don’t drink. Alcohol would have significantly interfered with my healing process. I was also strict about avoiding gluten and sugar during the acute hair loss phase as well.
I drank approximately 100 oz of water and took high quality fish oil each day. Plus, I make a conscious effort to eat adequate amounts of animal protein for the complete amino acid profile. Protein is the building block for rebuilding and repairing the cells, tissues, muscles, bones, organs in the body.
Unplugging from social media and knitting more to regulate my nervous system.
Prayer!
Whenever I go through something like gluten intolerance, gray area drinking, women’s health issues, hormone stuff, Covid hair loss, etc and it gets gaslit with “there’s nothing you can do” or, “maybe you’re just imagining things”, I get even more passionate about finding and sharing the Healthy Discoveries.
There are answers.
There are always answers!
